The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) on Wednesday enlightened secondary school students in Ogun about ways to prevent electricity accidents, especially during harmattan period.

Addressing students of Lisabi Grammar School, Abeokuta at the school premises, Mr Abdulrazaq Jimoh, Regional Head of IBEDC, noted that it was important to sensitise the students to why they should be careful in tampering with electrical equipment.

Jimoh also warned the students and their teachers on the dangers of tampering with electrical installations, overcrowding electrical sockets and burning of bushes under high tension electric wires

The regional head stated that the sensitisation would promote safety in the use of electrical equipment and appliances at home, schools or anywhere and reduce the rate of electricity hazards among the students.

“ We sensitise them to how to prevent electricity fire hazards, especially during harmattan and why they should not burn bushes under high tension electric wires

“ As a socially responsible corporate entity, IBEDC identified the need to enlighten the school children on the importance of safety with regards to electrical equipment and appliances.

“This sensitisation is so important because we are moving closer to the dry season and during the dry season a lot of people want to use electricity and there is need for caution,” he said.

Jimoh urged the students to report to a senior person or a nearest IBEDC office in case they detected any electricity fault.

He appealed to parents to always watch out for their children so that they would not play around with electric appliances that might be very dangerous to them.

Responding, Mrs Titilope Odutayo, the Principal of Lisabi Grammar School, appreciated the idea of the IBEDC, pointing out that most of the children knew nothing about electricity.

Odutayo stated that enlightening the pupils and giving them tips on how to handle appliances was commendable.

“It is a welcome idea because most of these children know nothing about electricity and coming around to give them tips on how to handle electrical appliances is really commendable,” she said.
